Te Uru Kahika and our member councils are committed to building and maintaining strong, enduring relationships with Māori. These relationships are fundamental to how councils work and are an important part of meeting both current and future responsibilities under legislation.
A shared understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi, and the history of Aotearoa New Zealand, supports this kaupapa. To assist with that understanding, we have brought together two sets of Crown material relevant to local government activity:
-
- Crown acknowledgements of Treaty breaches relating to taiao (the environment), public works, infrastructure, and renewable energy; and
- Crown statements recommitting to Tiriti‑based relationships.
The documents are organised by regional and unitary authority, and are sourced from original deed documents information on Te Tari Whakatau’s website. For further detail on Treaty Settlements more broadly, see
Te Tari Whakatau’s website. They are provided as contextual material to support informed decision‑making, to increase awareness of the historical context of particular places and activities, and to help guide programmes or projects where long‑standing Treaty issues may be relevant. This information can help councils approach relationships and initiatives with greater understanding, care, and confidence.
